More than 200 billion videos are watched online every month.

It’s Saturday night and somewhere in the world a family is in front of a screen planning to watch a movie. Instead of a television, they are using a computer. Today many are changing old DVDs and not so old Blu-Rays for a more modern choice: watching videos on the internet. According to a research developed by Ofcom, a British organization, 27% of people in the UK are watching videos and movies online. The Canada is the country with the highest number of videos watched online per viewer. There each person watches 303 videos. The US and The UK are in the second and third position in this ranking, developed by comScore, an Internet marketing research company.

The comScore report also shows that 200 billion videos are watched online every month by1.2 billion people. Google has a huge participation in this new worldwide habit –– 44% of all videos accessed during a month are watched in a Google’s product, especially on YouTube, the most popular video-sharing website in the world. Other sites are also being used by many. More than 4.6 billion videos are watched every month on Youku, the most popular video hosting service in China. In the third position, with 3.7 billion videos watched monthly, is Vevo the American music video website. The Top-5 is completed with Facebook (2,5 billion) and the online gaming service Dwango (2,4 billion).

People aren’t watching video online only in the occidental world. According to the comScore  study, the ranking of places by videos watched monthly includes three Asian countries. In Japan the average is 222, putting it in the sixth position worldwide. Honk Kong is the Top 9, with 160 videos watched per person. Singapore completes the list, with 153 videos.

Eric Schmidt, the Executive Chairman of Google, has said recently that in 2012 Google TV will be a sales hit. If his expectations involving Google’s TV become true even more people will be watching videos online very soon.
