The Best Day to Release an App is…

According to a study, at least 2,000 new apps are created each day. App developers must be careful to choose the best time to launch a new product.

During the last hour, almost 90 new apps were released somewhere in the world. The AngryBirds, a video game that has become famous on Apple Store, and Instagram, one software that allow the user to share pictures, are some good examples of apps that have been a hit this year. In the past a famous slogan has said “There's an app for that.” Today this is only half true: there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of apps for that.

According to a study from Mobilewalla, a web company based in Singapure, there are 987,863 apps available for users on the biggest four platforms - iOS from iPhone and iPad, Android from Google, BlackBerry and Windows Phone. The research was conducted during a 17-week period from May to September, 2011. During this time, 91,754 apps were released in the Apple Store and 122,220 into the Android Market. Today iPhone and iPad users have almost 600,000 apps available and Android users have 320,000, significantly more than that was registered last year.

Mobilewalla’s study is also interesting for app developers. The researchers analyzed the number of apps created by day of the week. They discovered that apps released on Sundays achieve better results than on other days, which makes Sunday the best day to launch a mobile app on the market. 42% of the iPhone or iPad apps launched on Sundays become a hit. Thursdays seems to be a bad day to release an app, especially an Android one. Only 7% of Android’s apps became a hit in those days, according to the study.

Although the study can help app developers worldwide, we must be careful to trust in all its conclusions, at least concerning Apple’s apps. This is because iTunes controls the day that apps will be released on the Apple Store, while Android apps are launched on any day that its creator may request.
