The Computer Era

Posted by: in News

The first computers were big and bulky and nothing like what we know and love today. Now you can carry a faster machine in your pocket.

Those of us born in the 80’s and who grew up during the 90’s surely can’t understand how the world existed for so much time without internet, Google, Facebook, Skype and the like.  Yes, life was harder before the computer era and affected how people used to work, talk with family and friends or merely have fun.  This may appear just a joke for who grow up when the typewriter was an important working tool (now it is only part of a museum collection) but shows an undeniable truth: for many a computer is as important in daily routine as electricity or television.  Perhaps it even holds a small advantage over the TV because in case of a blackout a TV will be useless while a notebook, smartphone or tablet will have battery for a few hours more.

The Computer Revolution

It is interesting to realize how the technological world has grown and changed over the past 20 years.  Decades ago a familiar computer was enormous and stayed on a living room or in the office. After this, there was a time when everybody had his or her own personal computer (still a huge desktop) in their bedrooms. The computer wasn’t a family centerpiece anymore but rather a personal commodity.  A few years later we entered the notebook’s age. And now we have tablets and smartphones, small personal computers that fit in your hand.  It’s possible to access the internet anytime and from anywhere but all documents, pictures, games and messages were stored inside the computer, on the hard drive. Today we just put everything in the cloud…   In the beginning we used computers to know what was happening in the rest of the world. Today we use computers, tablets and smartphones and, with one click the rest of the world will know what we are saying.    From the 7 billion persons living in the world, around 2 billion are internet users. Facebook has itself 800 million users. 200 million tweets are published in Twitter and 48 new video hours are available on YouTube every single day.

And in the End

Yes, the world has changed. And this is, in part, because of computers and the way we use them. It’s difficult to forecast the future of the relationship between man and machine but one thing is sure: don’t blink, even for a minute. Otherwise you will not be ready for what comes next in the computer era.
