How Cloud Computing Can Save Your Money

Posted by: Luiza Antunes in Technologies

A company adopting cloud computing may reduce their energy consumption, carbon emissions and capital spending on IT resources, says a study by The Carbon Disclosure Project.

Imagine saving $12.3 million in energy costs until 2020 and, at the same time, reducing carbon emissions comparable to 200 million barrels of oil a year. This is an actual forecast which analyzed UK, French and US companies that have used cloud computing for at least two years.  The study suggests that in nine years, firms with annual revenues of more than $1 billion will achieve this kind of savings by increasing their investments on public and private cloud services to 69 percent of infrastructure, platform and software budgets.

“Financial benefits from more efficient use of IT hardware, reduced energy consumption from data centres and a reduced support team mean firms can achieve a payback in under a year”, said Stuart Neumann, the Verdantix (an independent analyst firm) senior manager who led the research, that was sponsored by AT&T. The cloud computing can solute, all together, some of the biggest concerns of large or small enterprises, that is increase efficiency and reduce costs in a sustainable way.

Walking in the Cloud

The Cloud refers to a space on the internet where you can store all your data and, more than that, run all services usually installed on your computer and access it remotely. It can be accessed from any place in the world, at any time, from any computer, with no installation requirement. It means that a company doesn’t have to actually install software for each staff computer, but rather operate one application that allows people to log onto a web-based host to all programs the user needs. Thereby, the access to all programs is remote and everything from email to a spreadsheet application can be opened and edited from either a site-based machine or mobile device.

Once external servers store and process all data, companies have to buy less hardware, at the same time improving their effectiveness and flexibility.
