E-commerce extends to mobile devices this Christmas

Posted by: in News

The time for sales is coming, and coming fast. The 25th of December approaches and with it, holiday sales.

The fear and unfamiliarity with internet shopping has decreased and nowadays, ecommerce no longer makes consumers suspicious. In the first semester of 2011, even with the crisis, people in the U.S. spent 14% more than last year in retail e-commerce (according to a comScore report). This demonstrates the increasing familiarity with shopping online and people are more likely than ever to research and make purchases through digital devices.

TechCrunch published an article about how some of the most well known websites, like Google, eBay and PayPal are already waiting for the earnings of the holiday season, with consumers spending even more online with an increasing popularity towards using mobile devices for shopping.  eBay waits for $5 billion in gross merchandise volume in 2011, helped by strong mobile presence in November and December.  At PayPal, $10 million payments per day are being completed by mobile devices, and this isn’t even peek holiday shopping period yet.  Google expects that 15% of searches on Black Friday (one of the biggest shopping days of the year, the day after Thanksgiving) will come from mobile devices.

Time for apps-commerce

A slight, but significant, difference about shopping this year is that e-commerce now also comes through mobile applications. No matter if it’s in a digital or a physical store, a cell phone and tablet are interactive platforms carried everywhere and help both costumers and retailers drive transactions.

Apps like barcode scanning and stores catalogs that help customers find the exact product they want are increasingly common and are one of the best bets for retailers to improve their sales. From Black Friday (on 25th November this year) until the second Sunday of December, it’s the time to shine for e-commerce.  In just a few weeks it will be clear if the projects for this season ring true.
