A 40-year-old Machine

On November 15, 1971, the world changed forever. On that day was created Intel 4004, the world’s first microprocessor.

When did the world of computers begin? It’s a difficult question.  Different persons have contributed to the creation of  the machine you are using now. If there are many important dates in the timeline history of computers, one date must be remembered: November 15, 1971. Laptops, notebooks, netbooks, smartphones and tablets (all from computers’ family) exist  thanks in part to the invention that occurred on that day. We are talking about Intel 4004, the world’s first microprocessor, which celebrates its 40th birthday this week.

Intel 4004 was innovative, particularly for its time:  A 4-bit and 16-pin microprocessor that could perform 92,600 instructions per second. It was used in calculators to add, subtract, multiply and divide. It could carry out approximately 1,200 calculations per second, a new world record that would soon be broken. Intel 4004 was introduced to the world through Electronic News magazine, “Announcing a new era of integrated electronics”, said Intel.  Intel 4004 was the first chip of its kind; all its transistors were in the same small piece. On that day the commercial production of microprocessor began.

A few years later Intel created 4004’s heirs, the 4040 and the 8080, the first microprocessors built only for computers. Today, machines are much more capable: in the last 40 years the computer has become increasingly vital, first in the corporative world, and later for families worldwide. Companies can’t work without computers. One system crash could mean wasting an entire working day.  Corporations have learned the importance of choose the right computer, the correct software and a management system to avoid such disasters.

40 years ago Intel announced the 4004 in a magazine. Today any new product is released directly on the internet, and with eCommerce, you don’t even need to leave home to buy it. It’s easier and more comfortable, right? If you agree, you have the Intel 4004 to thank.
